Real-money online casinos aren’t legal in South Carolina, and neither is online sports betting. The state has no commercial casinos, and the lottery is the only form of gambling voters have ever approved. What South Carolina players can use online are sweepstakes and social casinos, which run on virtual coins instead of cash wagers.
Here’s what South Carolina law allows, six sweepstakes casinos that list South Carolina players, and what could change after the November election. Offers and availability change, so read each site’s terms before you sign up. If you want a second opinion on any site, our most trusted online casinos guide is a good place to start.
Quick Answer: South Carolina Online Casinos
18+ at some sites, 21+ at most. No purchase necessary. Sweeps Coins have no cash value and cannot be purchased directly. Void where prohibited. Check each site’s terms for South Carolina availability.
Are Online Casinos Legal in South Carolina?
Not for real money. South Carolina is one of the last holdouts on legal gambling. The state lottery, approved by voters in 2000, is the only legal option, and there’s no regulated online casino or sportsbook. Sports bettors who want a legal option have long crossed the state line, often to Charlotte, where North Carolina allows mobile betting. Our North Carolina online casinos page covers what that state offers.
Sweepstakes casinos sit in a gray area, though a fairly quiet one. No South Carolina law specifically bans them, and the reviews we checked found no state agency or court action against sweepstakes operators. Bills to legalize sports betting or casinos come up almost every year and go nowhere, and none in the 2025 to 2026 session went after sweepstakes sites.
That doesn’t make it permanent. Attorney General Alan Wilson, who is running for governor, opposes casinos, and enforcement in other states has changed fast. Florida’s attorney general, for example, sued sweepstakes operators this year. Sites can also pull out of a state with little warning. Georgia, another state without legal casinos, has a similar setup, and our Georgia online casinos guide shows how it compares.
What the November Election Could Change
South Carolina votes for governor on November 3. Gov. Henry McMaster is term-limited and has opposed every gambling expansion since 2017. Both candidates to replace him say they’re open to online sports betting, which would be a first for the state, but they’d get there differently.
- Alan Wilson (R): Supports online sports betting with guardrails and opposes casinos, even if voters want them.
- Jermaine Johnson (D): Supports sports betting and casinos if voters approve them in a referendum, and is open to taxing prediction markets.
Neither has released a detailed plan, and neither has said anything about sweepstakes casinos. Any change to sports betting would take lawmakers months to pass. If prediction markets interest you, our prediction market promo codes page compares the current offers.
Social vs. Sweepstakes: What Is the Difference?
A social casino runs on one currency. You play with virtual coins for fun, and nothing converts back to cash.
A sweepstakes casino adds a second currency. Gold Coins are play-only, while Sweeps Coins arrive free with promotions or bundled with a coin purchase. After you verify your identity and hit a site’s minimum, you can redeem Sweeps Coins for prizes, including cash or gift cards. Most sites also offer a free mail-in entry, which is what keeps the model outside gambling law.

Sites That Have Left South Carolina
Not every sweepstakes casino stays in every state. Some reviews list MyJackpot as having pulled out of South Carolina, and availability for others varies by source. Arizona has seen a similar wave of operators leaving, which we cover in our Arizona online casinos guide. If a site you already use stops loading or won’t let you redeem, check its terms for a South Carolina restriction.
Games at South Carolina Sweepstakes Casinos
Slots take up most of every lobby, from classic three-reel games to Megaways and bonus-buy titles. A few sites add live dealer blackjack, roulette and baccarat, along with table games, video poker and crash-style games. If you mostly play on your phone, our best casino apps ranking shows which sites feel best on mobile.
| Game Type | Typical House Edge |
|---|---|
| Blackjack | 0.5% to 2% |
| Roulette | 2.7% (European), 5.26% (American) |
| Slots | 2% to 10% |
| Baccarat | 1.06% (Banker), 1.24% (Player), 14.36% (Tie) |
| Video Poker | 0.5% to 5% |
Sweepstakes sites don’t always publish an RTP for every game, so treat these as rough benchmarks.
How Coins Work at Sweepstakes Sites
Gold Coins (GC) are for play and can’t be redeemed.
Sweeps Coins (SC) are the ones that count. You can’t buy them directly, but they come with promotions and Gold Coin packages. Most sites want identity verification before your first redemption and set a minimum, usually 10 SC for gift cards and 50 to 100 SC for cash. Payout speed varies a lot from site to site, and our Best Payout Casinos guide breaks down who pays out best.
How to Sign Up at a South Carolina Sweepstakes Casino

- Claim the free sign-up coins. None of these six sites makes you buy anything to start.
- Verify your identity early so your first redemption isn’t delayed.
- Redeem a small amount first to see how it works.
