    The transfer portal has made the starting job at a Power 4 program feel more like a lease than a title. Somebody signs a big-money deal, wins the summer hype cycle, and then two bad quarters later there’s a message board thread asking why the backup isn’t in yet. That’s the world we’re in, and it’s exactly why this market exists. Two weeks into the season, a handful of names are already separating from the pack \u2014 for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here’s where our board stands heading into Week 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Drew Mestemaker, +150<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Oklahoma State brought in Mestemaker as a five-star transfer to be the centerpiece of a total roster overhaul, and Week 1 could not have gone worse. Tulsa \u2014 a program the Cowboys hadn’t lost to since 1952 \u2014 beat them 24-10, and Mestemaker didn’t just lose, he got outplayed by a Golden Hurricanes quarterback nobody outside of Tulsa had heard of. Mike Gundy’s seat was already lukewarm coming off a 3-9 season, and a hook this early would basically be Gundy trying to save his own job before it’s Halloween. Nobody’s benching a five-star after one game, usually. This isn’t usually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dylan Lonergan, +250<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Rutgers went and got Lonergan in the portal expecting an upgrade, and instead got a guy who threw multiple interceptions and then couldn’t finish the game because of an injury. He’s now in a real competition with AJ Surace, and unlike most of the names on this board, Lonergan doesn’t have the luxury of a clean bill of health working in his favor. If the arm’s fine but the job isn’t safe, that’s a bad combination two games into a season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    DJ Lagway, +400<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Lagway landed at Baylor with real pedigree attached to his name, and the numbers weren’t even the problem in Week 1 \u2014 it was the moment. Fourth quarter, chance to beat Auburn, ball sails just inside instead of finding a receiver, game’s over. Dave Aranda is coming off his third losing season in four years and has a brutal stretch of Colorado, Arizona State, UCF, Iowa State, BYU, Texas Tech and Houston still on the schedule. A coach in that position doesn’t have a long runway for “almost.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Julian Lewis, +550<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Colorado’s offense looked shaky in Week 1 while the defense was busy getting run over for 320 yards on the ground, and Lewis was part of the inconsistency, not above it. He’s not walking a plank yet, but this program has shown before that it’ll make a change fast if the results don’t follow the hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Rest of the Board<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (+800) actually has a decent excuse \u2014 he played through an injury for most of the second half against UCLA and threw a couple picks while banged up, which is a very different situation than a guy just playing bad football. JC French IV (+1000) hasn’t been disastrous at Cincinnati, just underwhelming, and Scott Satterfield doesn’t have much patience banked after last year’s five-game skid. Arch Manning (+2000) rounds out the board more as a name-value inclusion than a real threat \u2014 17-of-32 for 170 yards in a season-opening loss was genuinely bad, first time a preseason No. 1 has dropped its opener since 1990, but Texas isn’t benching the most talked-about quarterback in the country in September. That number’s long for a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Don’t Expect This to Move Fast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    College benchings almost never happen off one bad week \u2014 coaches want a body of work before they blow up a QB room two games into the season, especially with a guy they just paid to be there. Last year’s version of this list didn’t really start shaking out until Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry after an 0-3 start and made a switch under center in the process, and that was Week 3 territory, not Week 2. Expect something similar here: this board is going to look completely different in a month, and whoever’s on top right now probably isn’t the guy who ends up actually losing the job first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
