    Week 1 already thinned out a lot of pools. If you lost a ticket to the Bears-Panthers shootout, or worse, you actually took the Browns against Jacksonville \u2014 welcome to Week 2, where the field is smaller and your pick matters more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I want to be upfront about something before we get into the picks: the “best team on paper” and the “best survivor pick” are not always the same thing. A lot of pool players learn that the hard way in November, not Week 2. So let’s talk about both \u2014 what’s safe this week, and what’s actually smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What This Week’s Board Looks Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Good news first. This is a friendlier week than usual. San Francisco is favored by somewhere around 12-13 points over Miami depending on which book you’re looking at. Baltimore is laying nearly two touchdowns on New Orleans. Philadelphia’s on the road but still favored by a full touchdown against a Titans team that didn’t show much in its opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The bad news is obvious if you’ve played survivor for more than a season: when three or four favorites are this big, everybody sees the same numbers you do. Your pool doesn’t lose many entries this week, which sounds fine until you realize that means the pick you’re about to make isn’t really buying you anything relative to the next guy’s pick. More on that in a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Picks I’d Actually Consider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    San Francisco (home vs. Miami)<\/strong> is the biggest number on the board, full stop. Nearly two touchdowns, a Dolphins offensive line that got exposed in Week 1, and a 49ers defense that should feast. It’s the “safest” pick of the week by the numbers. The catch \u2014 and it’s a real one \u2014 is that this is going to be the most popular pick in almost every pool in the country, which limits its value even though the win probability is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Baltimore (home vs. New Orleans)<\/strong> might honestly be a better pick than San Francisco, not because the number’s bigger (it isn’t), but because fewer pools will have burned their Ravens ticket by Week 2. Baltimore looked like the best team in football in Week 1. New Orleans is starting over on the fly. I like this one a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then there’s Buffalo hosting Detroit<\/strong>, and this is the pick I keep coming back to. It’s not the biggest favorite of the day \u2014 somewhere around 4 to 4.5 points depending on the book, nowhere close to San Francisco or Baltimore. But Buffalo just won on the road in Houston, they’re opening their new stadium at home in front of a stadium full of people who’ve waited years for this, and Detroit has to travel into that. A four-point favorite in that spot is closer to a sure thing than the number suggests, and almost nobody’s going to use it because on paper it looks “risky” next to the two blowout favorites above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you’d rather save Buffalo too, Philadelphia at Tennessee<\/strong> and Kansas City at home against Indianapolis<\/strong> are both solid without being popular. The Eagles are giving a touchdown on the road, which I don’t love in general, but Tennessee’s offense was non-existent in the opener. Kansas City at home against a Colts team that just got run off the field by Baltimore is close to as safe as anything not named San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And don’t sleep on Tampa Bay against Cleveland<\/strong>. Nobody wants to use “Buccaneers” as their survivor pick because it doesn’t feel like a marquee team, but Cleveland looked genuinely bad in Week 1 and Tampa’s an 8+ point home favorite. Sometimes the boring pick is the smart pick precisely because nobody else wants to make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Teams I’m Staying Away From<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Dallas at home against Washington is only about a 3.5-4 point spread, which is too thin for a Cowboys defense that hasn’t shown me anything and a team that needed a shootout just to beat the Giants in Week 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Green Bay on the road at the Jets worries me too. A 3.5-point road favorite walking into a building where the home team is 0-1 and desperate is exactly the kind of spot survivor pools get burned in every single September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Seattle at Arizona is another one I’d pass on. The number’s in the 4.5-5.5 range, but division road games in Week 2 are volatile, and Arizona’s offense didn’t look lost in its opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Thing Nobody Tells You About Survivor Pools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The single biggest mistake isn’t picking a bad team. It’s picking the exact same team as 40% of your pool. If San Francisco somehow loses this week \u2014 and it’s unlikely, but this is football \u2014 a massive chunk of every large pool goes out at once. That doesn’t help you if you’re one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The real edge, especially in big pools, comes from finding a team that’s almost as safe as the chalk pick, but that draws a fraction of the attention. That’s the entire case for Buffalo over San Francisco this week. Ask yourself two things before you lock anything in: is this actually one of the four or five safest games on the slate, and will half your pool make the same pick you’re about to make? If the answer to both is yes, you’re taking on risk without getting paid extra for it. Drop down a tier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Don’t Burn Your Best Teams Too Early<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Every pool hits a stretch, usually somewhere in the Weeks 9-through-14 range, where the schedule turns ugly and there’s no obvious lock left on the board. The players who go deep aren’t the ones who correctly identified the biggest Week 2 favorite. They’re the ones who still have two or three elite teams sitting in reserve when everyone else is scrambling for value in Week 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So my actual rule for the first month of the season: take the second- or third-safest team instead of the runaway favorite, unless the gap between them is enormous. Right now that points me toward Buffalo or Tampa Bay over San Francisco \u2014 bank the 49ers for a week when they’re a heavy favorite against a genuinely bad team and the rest of the board has dried up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One more thing worth saying plainly: none of this is a guarantee. Survivor pools exist precisely because favorites lose sometimes. Pick the team you can live with losing, not just the biggest number on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
