Iowa at Washington — Washington -3
Iowa scored 14 points at home against Ohio State last week and went quiet for the entire middle of the game. Now the Hawkeyes fly to Seattle on a short week. Washington lost at USC 25-21, but it led at the half and needed a USC fumble return for a touchdown to finally lose it. Total’s sitting at 41.5, so yeah, this one’s going to be ugly. I’ll still give the field goal to the home team.
Saturday, Oct. 10 (Noon)
Indiana at Nebraska — Indiana -7.5
Nebraska’s 5-0 and still unranked, which honestly tells you how the voters feel about the schedule. The Huskers dropped 48 on Maryland. Cool. Indiana just beat Rutgers by 32 and has the better roster at basically every spot. I get the appeal of an unbeaten home dog in Lincoln. I’m just not buying it. Indiana.
Texas A&M at Missouri — Missouri -3.5
Missouri went from No. 25 to No. 14 after hanging 45 on Florida, which was ranked eighth at the time. A&M is 3-2 and already lost at home to Kentucky. Yes, the 34-7 win over Arkansas looked nice, but Arkansas isn’t Missouri. Classic letdown spot for the Tigers on paper. Still laying the hook.
Saturday Afternoon
Texas vs. Oklahoma (Dallas) — Texas -7.5
Both teams had last week off. Texas’ defensive front sacked Tennessee’s quarterback 10 times in that 20-17 win, and Oklahoma’s offense just got held to 13 by Georgia. Arch Manning hasn’t been lights-out (7 TDs, 3 picks), but he doesn’t need to be here. With a total under 40, every half-point matters, so grab -7.5 now. Some books are already at 8.
Ole Miss at Vanderbilt — Ole Miss -10.5
Vandy was the darling of college football for a minute there. Now it’s lost two straight to Auburn and Georgia, and the Georgia one was 38-14. Ole Miss is 3-1 and catching a Vandy team that looks like it’s running on fumes. Quick tip: this line is bouncing between 9.5 and 10.5 depending on the book, so shop around. I’d take the Rebels at either number.
UCLA at Oregon — UCLA +11.5
UCLA’s 4-0 and running for over 280 yards a game, which is fourth in the country. That’s the kind of offense that keeps the ball and shortens games, the exact thing you want when you’re getting double digits. Oregon can score with anybody (47-plus a game), but this defense is giving up 23 a week and already lost at Oklahoma State. Bruins with the points.
Tennessee at Arkansas — Arkansas +13.5
Arkansas got smoked 34-7 at A&M, so I’m not exactly thrilled about this one. But Tennessee’s offense is a mess right now. The O-line got manhandled by Texas, and Josh Heupel pulled Faizon Brandon against Auburn just to get something going. Laying two touchdowns on the road in the SEC with that much uncertainty at QB? No thanks.
Saturday Night
LSU at Kentucky — Kentucky +8.5
Kentucky’s won and covered three straight, including an upset at A&M and the biggest road comeback in program history at South Carolina, where the Wildcats were down 17-0 and won it in OT on a two-point conversion. Will Stein has this team believing. LSU’s 4-1, but beating McNeese 63-14 doesn’t tell us much. Night game at Kroger Field and Kentucky gets more than a touchdown? I’m in.
Georgia at Alabama — Georgia +1.5
Game of the week, no argument. Both teams are 5-0. Alabama’s scored at least 45 in every game with Keelon Russell and just put 61 on Mississippi State. Georgia hasn’t won in Tuscaloosa since 2007, which is wild. But the last time these two met, Georgia won the SEC title game 28-7, and Kirby Smart’s defense is the best unit on the field Saturday. This is basically a moneyline bet. Georgia.
USC at Penn State — USC +1.5
Penn State is 3-2 and has lost two in a row, including a 34-13 beatdown at Northwestern. Read that again. USC’s only loss is to Oregon, and Jayden Maiava has thrown for over 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns. Sure, it’s a night game in Happy Valley and a cross-country trip. I’ll still take the better team getting points.
